Wonderland.

(All found/written at Style.com) Last week, we previewed a sketch of Nicholas Kirkwood’s Alice in Wonderland-inspired heels, made on commission for the French department store Printemps, which is giving over its windows to all things Alice through March. (Sad to say, they’re window-only—you’ll have to find another pair to wear to the theater.) For the installation, Kirkwood is joined by Ann Demeulemeester, Alexander McQueen, Bernhard Willhelm, Charles Anastase, Christopher Kane, ChloĆ©, Haider Ackermann, Manish Arora, and Maison Martin Margiela, each of whom were given a window to fill as they saw fit. The windows went up this week in Paris. Below, Style.com takes a tour through the various Wonderlands and asks a few of the participating designers and design teams about their trip there.
“I think my favorite Alice character is the March Hare. You can see I’ve made his watch rather prominent. This was a different design process for me, because I’m not usually so applicative—typically, I’m thinking about line, silhouette. But this time, I figured, why not just pile as much as I can on top?” —Nicholas Kirkwood
“Alice’s silhouette is a blue upside-down dress with cage sleeve, as if she walked through the mirror and her dress completely reversed. A long ball gown has been reworked, upside-down, into a minidress. The bustier in taffetas becomes a pleated miniskirt. The petticoat in plonge becomes an asymmetrical draped top. The skirt in ‘plumetis’ tulle becomes a veil. A cage sleeve of whale-boned velvet ribbon is embroidered with pearls, crystals, and recycled jewels.” —Maison Martin Margiela **Peace, Luv, Fashion's personal favorite. Everything about this dress is beautiful and it's such an original spin on the traditional Alice in Wonderland blue dress.
“I went to John Tenniel’s original illustration of Alice for inspiration. She’s seated at a table having tea, and her dress looks much more asymmetrical and theatrical than that boring Walt Disney version. It was also an auto-reference to my collections, as Lewis Carroll’s work has been one of the main inspirations of my label since its creation. Alice Liddell, the real little girl with long dark hair who inspired Carroll, is one of the very few icons that I have. The pictures of her are a constant inspiration for me.” —Charles Anastase
“My favorite character is the Duchess, who at first seems nearly as unpleasant as the Queen of Hearts. But she’s the antagonist of the queen, and at the end was only respectful and friendly, despite her tremendous ugliness. When I was designing this piece, I was seeing Alice running, escaping through the forest destroying her shiny dress.” —Haider Ackermann
“Running around careless and free in a romantic dress, falling down the rabbit hole, chasing time in a dreamlike state of mind, meeting unexpected characters with many tales to tell—sounds like many a girl’s night out!” —ChloĆ© design team

Likke Lykke.

Swedish singer-songwriter Lykke Li, 23, was raised around the world—from Stockholm to Nepal, India, Morocco and Portugal. Perhaps that explains her ability to sound completely in her element whether performing her own quirky music, as on 2008’s Youth Novels; covering the Kings of Leon’s hard- rocking “Knocked Up”; or singing with Kanye West on “Gifted.” A performer at both Lollapalooza and the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival this year, she’s currently at work on a new album.

**I loved her song in the New Moon Soundtrack, Possibility

Also, I was completelly surprised by this photo. After only listening to Possibility I expected a Regina Spektor-esque girl, but her background and current style shines through some of her other tracks!

Urban-Gurl.

Basically the kind of style that makes me weak in the knees! I love minis, that are just fashionable and not at all trashy. The kind of minis that are the equivilant of skinny jeans. The kind of minis that just get thrown on and could be paired with knee highs, or boots, or converse!

Dear Miuccia.

I always look at the new collections before reading their reviews. I want to make sure I have as little bias as possible. So when I finished viewing all the looks the Prada Pre-Fall 2010 collection and read the skeptical review on Style.com, I was very shocked. The critic clearly didn't appreciate the camo print coats and sixties style minis. Everytime I looked back at the photos trying to find a crutique I was at a loss for words. I fell more and more in love with these outfits every time, and each time only thought of more perfect occasions to wear them to.This camo-print sort of peacoat/dress instantley reminded me of the book, soon to be movie: Dear John. That's why the post is called Dear Miuccia, because this "review" is really a love letter to a fashion greats latest collection! This look seems so simple, but it wasn't just the coat that made it. It was the shoes, the relaxed hair, natural makeup, and bare legs that brought it together. Every outfit in this collection I could see myself in, walking around the city streets (someday) to my fashion writing job at vogue (hopefully).
This coat reminded me of a fun blue Jackie O style suit by Marc Jacobs from a few seasons back. It was just juvenile enough to be fun, but it's not too bright of a hue of pink to be obnoxious. Also the red skirt and black top keep it grounded. It may be because I'm a tights fanatic but I think I've fallen for these minis because I could see myself wearing them with bright tights and boots. (h=Haven't you always wanted an excuse to wear hot pink tights after your fifth birthday?...this collection may be it!)
This coat was by far my favorite piece from the collection. With the deep red lining and plaid outside it looked straight out of That 70's Show..but from Jackie (Mila Kunis) not Donna..no worries! The bulkiness of the coat needs to be balanced delicatley. Leaving your legs bare doesn't make you look to bright overall, and just a simple black skirt is really all you need! Bring back the color, with a pop of sunshine on your feet!
I've never considered owning a khaki coat that wasn't a Burberry Trench before this collection. Don't ask me how Miuccia makes it as magnificant as she does, but everything seems to work with this look. It isn't a khaki overload, if you're woried about recreating this look; it seems like all the same color is okay as long as you have differnt textures. If it's cold I would add tights to this ensemble in a second and maybe even some over the knee flat Gucci boots.
As much as I enjoyed this look..the model seemed a little out of place with the rest of the show. (I guess that's my one crutique.) What makes this look? Many things, ofcourse the bold oversized sweater, (could be worn so many ways; skinny jeans + any geeky shoe -or- Ann Demeulemeester lace up boots + loose skirt + big belt -etc!) the pattern of the skirt, (reminded me of pillows I may have seen in the Brady Bunch!) or the shoes! I'm so utterly overwhelmed!
This coat was so great, it was like a chic Burberry coat X10! From the material to the model I was in love. I've already saved the picture to my computer and plan on finding this coat in a few years. Isn't it so working girl adorable? With a big Hermes bag or oversized satchel and those shoes..I'm sure I would be 100% more motivated to work, ha.
